Enhancing Studysuccess in Dutch Vocational and Higher Education
About
Irene Eegdeman was born in Middelburg, The Netherlands. After completing high school, she went to study at the University of Applied Sciences ‘Fontys Sporthogeschool’ in Tilburg. The next step was to graduate from the Master Human Movement Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and, while completing this Master’s degree, she started working at the Sportacademy Amsterdam, the vocational education institute which was also subject of her dissertation.
While working at the Sportacademy Amsterdam, Irene was confronted with the high dropout rate of students. As befits a curious researcher, she wanted to know where this dropout came from and whether dropout can be predicted (and prevented). This curiosity resulted an application for the NWO doctoral grant for teachers. The grant was rewarded to Irene and her supervisors prof.dr. Martijn Meeter and prof.dr. Chris van Klaveren in 2016. As with most research, the more research is done, the more questions remain. Student dropout is still a major social problem and Irene is dedicated to continuing her research and contributing to solutions that empower all students to succeed.
